East Los Angeles (also affectionately known as "East Los") is a large unincorporated area to the immediate east of downtown L.A. It's an easy commute to downtown, which is about four miles away. Buses, Metrolink commute rail and four freeways make for good transportation options. The area is both hilly and flat. Population (current year estimated for East Los Angeles CDP) is 131,255. Estimated number of households for the same period is 29,896.

This community is attractive to immigrants for its affordability and sense of community. East Los Angeles features some of the oldest houses in the Los Angeles area. Over one-third of the houses are owner occupied. The homes in the northern section are located in the hills; the rest of East Los Angeles is generally flat.

Schools are a part of the Los Angeles Unified School District. California State University, Los Angeles and East Los Angeles Community College are located here, and there is a great deal of community outreach by these educational institutions.

East Los Angeles is unincorporated, governed by the county Board of Supervisors and served by its departments. Over the last 30 years, several attempts have been made to incorporate the neighborhood as a city but all have failed.

There are about ten parks in the area, also several libraries (County of Los Angeles Public Library), outdoor murals, as well as shopping along Cesar Chavez Boulevard and downtown.
